PROF. DR. MD. MAHFUZAR RAHMAN was a medical graduate of Rajshahi University. He did his post graduation in Community medicine MPH (CM) from NOPSOM in the year 1982 and served in rural area (THC) before starting his academic career in the discipline of community medicine. Prof. M. Rahman obtained MHPEd (Masters in Medical Education) from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Sydney, Australia. He also obtained PhD (Public Health) in the year 2010 with distinction in Dissertation from Rochville University (USA) and also obtained FRSPH (Fellow of Royal Society for Public Health (UK) in September 2016.
Prof. M. Rahman participated in many national & International conferences as participants as well as resource person like; the 14th World Congress on Public Health & contributed as a speaker of the workshop on Public Health Education- Developing Need Based Competencies, 3rd SEARAME Conference from 12-15th November 2014 at Colombo, Sri Lanka, 6th International Conference on Medical Education at Fatima Jinnah Medical College, Lahore- Pakistan as speaker in a scientific session & resource person to conduct a workshop on “Educational Objective”, Speaker and Moderator at First SEARAME International Conference and 5th Indonesian Scientific Medical Education Expo and Meeting of WHO at Regional office SEARO on Quality Assurance and Continuing Medical Education as special invitee. He served as an Expert in a group meeting on Finalization of Regional Guidelines on Institutional Quality Assurance Mechanism for Undergraduate Medical education SEARO New Delhi and also contributed in the Third Meeting of the Network of Medical Councils of the WHO South East Asia Region Kathmandu. He has contributed as Temporary advisor of WHO for “In depth Evaluation of a specific content area funded through the supplementary ICP mechanism” in Nepal. He acts as an instructor of basic Hospital Preparedness in Emergency (HOPE) & Training for Instructor (TFI) course organized by NSET, and PEER, Nepal. In addition to teaching he was keen to involve as resource person in conducting research methodology & teaching methodology workshops, seminars both at home & abroad.
He was keen in contributing as Consultant under Medical Education for Essential Health Services (MEEHS), DFID funded component of the Government’s Health and Population Sector Program (HPSP), in FIMC Project and also involved in the same project for curriculum development in community medicine for the undergraduates, and conducted many training programs for the teachers in teaching and assessment methods and contributed in developing undergraduate curriculum in family medicine for piloting at three government medical colleges in Bangladesh. He worked as a Team Leader of Bangladesh Hajj medical team and at ICDDR’B on epidemic control of Diarrheal diseases as SAARC fellow. He conducted many workshops at different medical colleges on Quality Assurance in undergraduate medical education and implemented Quality Assurance Scheme in different medical colleges in the country. He has contributed in promoting the theme of Social Accountability in medical colleges as an Executive member of Public Health Foundation (Phfbd) of Bangladesh.
He was member of Bangladesh Medical Research Council (BMRC), Member Committee of Courses and Studies; Faculty of Medicine, Rajshahi University, Member National Association of Medical Education (NAME); Bangladesh, Vice-President Society of Community Medicine, and Managing Editor Journal of Preventive & Social Medicine (JOPSOM). He is a life member of South East Asian Regional Association for Medical Education (SEARAME). He was an acting editor of Anwer Khan Modern Medical College journal (AKMMCJ) and also contributing as an Executive member of Public Health Foundation (Phfbd), He had close association with the activities of Quality assurance in medical education, Faculty development, Students assessment, Academic administration and Human resource development and also in public health & educational research. He has many national & international publications in the field of medical education & public health and also contributing in promoting the theme of Social Accountability of Medical Education Institutions in South East Asia. He also participated training on Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI Program) on Biomedical research (Basic course), Conflict of interest mini course (Stage-1), Human research (Basic course) at BMRC, Mohakhali, Dhaka-1212 from 02.04.2018 to 04.04.2018. He performed responsibilities as visiting professor, in the deptt. of Community Medicine at Anwer Khan Modern Medical College (AKMMC), Dhanmondi, Dhaka-1205 from 01.11.2010 to 31.01.2023 after retirement.
Currently he is involved with Bangladesh Medical Research Council (BMRC) activities specially in conducting various workshops related to Bio-medical research including review of funded protocols including development of IRB faculty members training facilitator in different medical colleges in Bangladesh and also involved with Center for Injury Prevention of Bangladesh (CIPRB) as Chairman of Ethical review committee. In addition, he is involved as a guest teacher & examiner of Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) in conducting M.Phil (HHM) courses in public health at Armed Forces Medical Institutes (AFMI) in Bangladesh since 2005 to till date.
